Manhattan Toy Company teddy

Manhattan Toy Company teddy

Hello all,

I’m currently trying to find a teddy bear made by the Manhattan Toy Company and bought in the early 1990s. The bear would be a replacement for an old one, who I tragically lost a few years ago and who I’ve been dying to replace ever since! I’m not really a teddy bear collector but this teddy was really quite special to me so I would love a replacement!
I know that there were a range of teddies made by the Manhattan Toy Company around the same time and that they came in a range of different sizes. I think my teddy was about 14 inches high when you put him flat. I hope the photos I’ve posted (really sorry, these are the only ones I’ve got) give you an idea of the bear. He was brown with slightly lighter paw pads for his feet and paws with black eyes and nose. He didn’t have any beans and so couldn’t stand or sit by himself! The most distinctive feature of the teddy I’m after, though, is his cute green tartan bow which he wore around his neck.
I have done a bit of research and it seems that these teddies are really quite rare, although the Manhattan Toy Company did make a range of other cuddly toys and continue to do so today. I think this teddy was bought in a shop in the UK in early 1994, although I haven’t been able to find out where exactly and for how much.
The personal history of my teddy is that he was given to me as a christening present and sat on the end of my bed until my early teens. I’m ashamed to say that I decided when I was 13 that I was now ‘too grown up for Teddy’ and banished him to my old toy box, although he frequently escaped from his box when no one else was around! My younger cousin found him about five years ago and sadly left him on the floor of my room for the dog to later pick up and ruin! Oh well, these things happen.
Would really appreciated all the help and any advice you can give. Do you recognise or have you ever seen this teddy? Any ideas as to how I should go about hunting for a replacement? The quirky yellow crown on Teddy’s label is quite distinctive so hopefully this might jog your memory!
Thanks so much,
Bethany

Certainly!

I've realised looking back that my bear may actually be smaller than your own. Mine is 6 inches in height, so only a tiny thing!

He's a greyish brown colour but pictures more of a honey brown, much like the one in your picture (hence why I thought they may be the same!). His colour may change as he is quite old and could do with a wash in reality. I'm happy to pop him in the washing machine and find out for you!

He has honey coloured paw pads, and the same striking tartan bow!

I wish we could pop a picture in the comments as you would be able to see him properly, but please do feel free to ask any other questions and I'm happy to find a way to send some pictures over!

Thanks Isabella!
by: Bethany

Hi Isabella, thanks so much for your comment!
That's really good to know, I know they have rabbits in the same range as my teddy but I didn't realise they had dogs too. I'm really sorry, I've never seen one but will keep an eye out and let you know if I can track one down for you!
How big is your dog, and any ideas where he was bought? Also, don't suppose you have any photos of him, do you?

Dog
by: Isabella

Hi,

I have a very similar teddy, though he is a dog with long flat ears, but his fur is the same colour and has worn in the same way, he also originally had that same ribbon. I've had him since I was born in 1993, I have found pictures in other corners of the internet of this lovely bear but never found his dog counterpart. Would be curious if anyone else was looking for him!

Not good news...
by: Rob

Hi Bethany, Bartram is 14 inches, he did look identical to your bear.

I sent an email to Manhattan toys yesterday (3rd Dec) as I am also interested in whether we can get more bears, sadly this was their reply.

Good luck in your search Bethany.

Hi Robert,

Thank you for reaching out to us about this bear. I’m sorry but I am unable to find the bear in our inventory. We have switch our manufacture warehouse in the early 2000’s so we don’t even have samples of the bear.
My best advice is to look on websites such as Amazon and Ebay.
If you have any questions or concerns please email me back. Once again I am so sorry I was not able to find the bear for you.

Best,

Re: We have the same issue
by: Bethany

Hi Rob,

Thanks so much for your comment! It's really exciting to hear about other teddies from this company and great to hear that yours found such a good home! Can i ask quickly - was your teddy roughly the same height as mine (about 14 inches tall) or slightly larger/smaller? They seem to have come in a range of sizes.

Thank you!

We have the same issue
by: Rob

Hi Bethany,

Have done intermittent searches for this bear also.

We have one of these bears and have had him since the early 1990s, I bought him for my wife, we named him Bartram and he's still with us. We bought him in an alternative style shop in Northampton.

He looks a lot like the bear in the first pics of this search, but we lost his ribbon years ago. He hasn't looked like your bear for years as he's been cuddled so much.

Bartram was passed on to our oldest daughter, who passed it on to her younger sister and he is still being snuggled with.

I've been looking for more of these bears also, but haven't had any success yet.

May be an idea to contact the Manhattan Toy Company themselves.

Good luck!

Alas, it has no ribbon but seems to look exactly like your lost one. Maybe he lost his ribbon during his travelling? who knows what bears do when you don't look!
