1954 teddy bear

1954 teddy bear

This bear was given to me the day I was born by my grandfather in 1954. He has a music box which is wound by the key that sticks out of his back. The original box played Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. This eventually wore out as I believe it had to be re-wound many times each night to put me to sleep.
He is 17"-43cm tall & is very firmly stuffed. He is quite heavy for his size. Paw pads are fabric, not leatheret. His nose has been re embroidered, probably due to the fact I can remember kissing him a lot.His ears seem to be slightly pointed. He has brown glass eyes & is jointed on his arms & legs but not his head
I have included a photo of myself holding him, but I am not sure how old I am in the photo or when it was taken.
I am not really interested in his value as I will never part with him, but would like to know what brand he may be.
Any help appreciated.
Thank You

Key on the back
by: Reswob

I noticed it was the key to the music box after I posted the comment. Silly me! :P During the course of my reading about the early days of toy making in Australia I think that companies like Verna and Jakas made jointed mohair bears that were unlabeled. If he's one of those, he'll be highly sought after by collectors and worth a few dollars. I'm no expert though, I'm just a novice bear maker. If you Google the names I mentioned it might be helpful. I'd post some photos but I'm in the process of moving house. My bears are in boxes and my bear making literature is spread between three rooms.

Thank You for you comments. These isn't a tag on his back. It is the key that winds the music box inside him.Sorry Reswob, I haven't seen anything on tags that you are describing. Some pictures would help.

Tag on the back
by: Reswob

Hi there,

Thanks for sharing your fantastic teddy with the world! The photo of you as a child was a great personal touch.

From the photos I can see that the teddy has a tag on his back. Do you think it could be possible to see what this tag looks like close-up or do you think you could tell us what it says please?

I'm in Australia and I am trying to identify a teddy bear I picked up from a tip shop. When I get the time, I'll post an entry on him. He has a tag on his leg that is a bluish-grey color. On one side it has "SA" inside a diamond shape and on the other side is written "Made in China." This teddy is unjointed but has a comparable chunky build to yours. It's made of golden mohair and has large glass eyes. Does any if this sound familiar?
